The word pedes means foot and centi means hundred while milli means thousand. While it does not translate correctly one of the main differences is how many legs each one has. If it has two sets of legs then it is a millipede, one set is centipede. Both are arthropods and a very basic definition of that is invertebrate animal.

As for the breakdown of each they are vastly different. Centipedes are carnivores meaning they eat flesh. Millipedes are the opposite and are herbivores meaning they eat plants or organic material. Centipedes can bite, while millipedes might not. We suggest not handling either just to be on the safe side.
